Our story
Two cultures, one bag of granola
From kindergarten in Japan to a kitchen in Washington.
Hi! I'm Minako, creator of Wanola Granola.
I am shaped by two distinct cultures: one known for fierce liberty and bold flavors, the other for centuries of tradition and quiet respect. My journey has been a series of moves across the Pacific, from kindergarten in Japan to high school in the US, college and a food industry career in Japan, and finally returning to the US to raise my family. For decades, I've straddled these two worlds.
The best part of that journey? The food, and the way it brings people together. I crave both the umami and subtle layers of Japanese cuisine, and the straightforward satisfaction of American food (sometimes you just need a juicy burger and a mountain of fries!). But food always tastes best when it's shared, munching and laughing with the people we love.
Wanola Granola grew out of these experiences. I wanted something with the layered depths of my Japanese heritage and the hearty soul of my American upbringing.
I inherited my love of food from my mom, who got it from her parents. And yes, my kids got the Foodie Gene too! Food is my love language, and Wanola Granola is how I share love with the world.
I hope my granola brings you a sense of 和 (wa) and joy.
Thanks for being here!
The brand
Why 'Wanola'
Wanola Granola came to life in 2025 when I realized the granola I wanted didn't exist: a blend that honors the nuanced flavors of Japan while delivering the comfort of an American classic.
Wa 和 means harmony, peace, and Japanese-style. It's the philosophy behind everything I make – flavors that balance rather than compete, and tradition meeting modern taste. That's why it's in the brand name!
My first creation, Essential Matcha, pairs authentic Japanese matcha with kuromitsu, a dark syrup treasured in Japan for centuries. After countless test batches, I developed an in-house kuromitsu with the rich, complex flavors of molasses and caramel that doesn't overpower the earthy matcha. The result? A subtly sweet, crunchy-yet-crumbly granola that keeps you reaching back into the bag.
This is granola for people who appreciate flavor. I hope it brings you joy in every bite.
